In this series, Nicolina Morra references photographs taken by Stan Wayman for LIFE Magazine during the height of Beatlemania, alongside quotations from the 1964 Photoplay article “Are the Beatles a Religion” by Ken Ferguson. The article describes The Beatles not simply as entertainers, but as symbolic figures who provided young audiences with a sense of belonging, security, and transcendence absent from everyday life. Morra’s paintings focus on the emotional intensity of the audience rather than the performers themselves, capturing moments of collective devotion and ecstatic surrender. By drawing parallels between fandom and religious worship, the works examine how pop culture can generate experiences of faith, communion, and spiritual longing. The blurred, overwhelmed spectators become figures seeking transcendence through spectacle, reflecting the human desire to escape ordinary life and participate in something larger than oneself.
