In this painting, Merrill returns to the taxidermied trophy of the 20th-century American home. The deer head is positioned by synthetic dark foliage, its large antlers casting complex shadows against walls of muted pink and mint. This play of light creates a multi-tonal, pastel palette as a background for the deer that remains an eerie witness, its static gaze reflecting the growing disconnect between our sanitized, neoliberal spaces and the wilder, more perilous world beyond the drywall.
