Reaper, 2026, Oil on canvas, 91.5 x 91.5 cmRebecca Storm was born and raised on Vancouver Island, BC and now lives and works as a painter in Montreal, QC. She paints to understand the psyche. With consideration to forces inside and outside the self, she explores how they impact the way we catalogue memories— consciously, subconsciously, and tangibly. Often working from collaged photographic references, Storm reinterprets and distorts the iconography of nostalgia, combining traditional visual symbols, as well as offering new semiotics to decipher contemporary psychological conundrums.

Traditionally associated with vanity and self-examination, the mirror here becomes distorted, suggesting an unstable or fractured understanding of the self. The obscured reflection evokes neuroses and compulsive introspection, a repeated attempt to search for certainty or meaning that never fully resolves. The title Reaper connects this cycle to compulsion itself: the endless gathering and revisiting of information in an effort to make sense of one’s thoughts and identity. Rather than offering clarity, the mirror traps the viewer within a loop of reflection and doubt.
