    Each piece is the result of a balance between meticulous preparation and spontaneous decision-making, embodying the duality of chaos and order. Frequently, his work reinterprets historical artifacts within contemporary contexts, bridging temporal divides and fostering a dialogue between past and present.

    Dimitris Tampakis is an artist and designer with a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts (2019-2021) and a degree in Product and Systems Design Engineering from the University of the Aegean (2009-2015). Since 2018, he has been a co-founder of the art group un.processed.realities, which engages in art and design in Athens and Tinos. In 2020, he collaborated with Philip Raskovich on the FUGA project at the ETOPIA Center for Art and Technology in Zaragoza, Spain, and in 2022, he participated in the Bajaramovic Unlimited hosting program in Athens.

    His work has been featured in group exhibitions in various institutions and independent spaces in Greece and abroad, including Theocharakis Foundation in Athens, (2024), POLE-SUD in Strasbourg (2024), HAUNT in Berlin (2023), Xeno in Sigri (2023), Foundation of Tinian Culture in Tinos (2023), the National Archaeological Museum in Athens (2023), Galerie Basia Embiricos in Paris (2024 & 2022), Kyan in Athens (2023), One Minute Space in Athens (2023 & 2024)Centrum Gallery in Berlin (2021), Keiv space in Athens (2021), MOMus in Thessaloniki (2018), UCL London (2019), and NBG Cultural Foundation in Athens (2019).

  • ARTIST STATEMENT

    My work embodies a tension, a deadly and liberating duality that mirrors the complexity of being human today. I often find myself drawn to the space between what feels instinctively alive and what feels numbed by the world we’ve built around us. I create to explore that space, to understand what it means to exist as a hybrid being, moving through an anaesthetised society, yet still yearning for moments of raw, existential clarity. I’m fascinated by those fleeting, unsettling moments that pull us out of complacency, the unexpected, the uncomfortable, the Call of the Void. They remind me that something primal still stirs within us, waiting to be awakened.
     
    My practice is rooted in the physicality of perception. I work with photographic prints on metal using old printmaking etching techniques, where I transfer images onto zinc sheets through a chemical process. This method merges photography with printmaking, but it also introduces an element of unpredictability since the transfer process and exposure time to acids often alter the final image in unexpected ways. The black surface in these works is not a color but the result of burning the material itself through acid. Additionally, light plays an active role in how the work is perceived as it reflects off the metal, the image shifts depending on the viewer’s position and the surrounding environment. In parallel, I create white prints on aluminium sheets using either silkscreen printing or a customized UV print machine.

    In my sculptural work, I primarily use aluminium, either by bending it or casting it through a DIY metal casting process in fireproof plaster molds. The casting technique does not allow for precise control over how the molten metal flows into the mold, often leading to unpredictable accidents that I choose to integrate into the final piece rather than correct. Nothing can be recreated exactly the same way twice, making each piece unique. The way light interacts with the metal further enhances this sense of change, continuously altering the viewer’s perception of the work. I want the viewer to move, to shift their body and perspective, to feel the work rather than simply see it. The positioning of each piece is deliberate; the encounter should be intimate, a quiet exchange between the artwork and the person standing before it.
     
    Accidents play a vital role in my process. I’ve learned to embrace them, to trust in the beauty of what emerges when control is loosened. Working with raw, unembellished materials, I create conditions where chance becomes a collaborator. This unpredictability reflects the fragility and fleeting nature of creation itself, that brief, visceral spark where something true reveals itself. Much of what I do involves recontextualising historical artefacts, placing them within a contemporary lens. I’m interested in the dialogue that forms between past and present, how time collapses when we confront the visceral and the sublime side by side. Ultimately, my aim is to provoke an instinctual response, something that cuts through indifference. I want my work to disrupt the quiet numbness of everyday life, to awaken a sense of aliveness that is at once uncomfortable and profoundly human.
