Johanna Bath German, b. 1980

In Origin of the World II, Johanna Bath presents the female body through an intimate, tightly cropped composition that reduces the figure to curves, skin, light and shadow. The soft focus and warm, muted tones create an image that feels both sensual and elusive, balancing physical presence with a sense of distance. Rather than exposing the body as spectacle, Bath fragments and abstracts it, inviting the viewer to linger on form and sensation.
The work directly echoes Gustave Courbet’s The Origin of the World, while shifting the gaze toward a more ambiguous encounter with femininity. Seduction and vulnerability coexist in the image, as the body becomes less an object to be consumed than a space of intimacy and agency.
