In Black Boot, Minyoung Kim isolates a single object, a heavy, enigmatic boot, within a dreamlike frame, transforming this ordinary item into a quietly surreal symbol. Its surface may glisten faintly, evoking traces of moisture or shadow, while the surrounding space feels still, theatrical, and ambiguous. Near it, a mysterious green form curves and flickers into view, an ambiguous presence that subtly destabilizes the scene. Is it a snake, a shadow, a trick of fabric or foliage? Its ambiguity is central to the painting’s emotional tension.
The contrast between the grounded, solid boot and the winding, uncertain green form sets up a visual and emotional polarity: presence and slippage, weight and motion, known and unknown.
