Rebecca Storm was born and raised on Vancouver Island, BC and now lives and works as a painter in Montreal, QC. She paints to understand the psyche. With consideration to forces inside and outside the self, she explores how they impact the way we catalogue memories— consciously, subconsciously, and tangibly. Often working from collaged photographic references, Storm reinterprets and distorts the iconography of nostalgia, combining traditional visual symbols, as well as offering new semiotics to decipher contemporary psychological conundrums.

Storm's friend is a hobbyist perfumer, and this is her cat. The artist appreciates cats' olfactory dependence on making sense of the world, understanding their surroundings, distinguishing between threats and comfort, how humans do this too to some extent... and she is interested in how this is thwarted/impacted by the existence of synthetic materials, in a practical way but also metaphorically. She has lately been making work that involves pets/animals more to extrapolate on our definitions of family, companionship, and even identity.
