• Overview

Lennart Rieder’s work engages deeply with the mechanics of perception, using painting as a means to explore how we see and interpret the world. His work invites viewers to reflect on the ways in which vision shapes our understanding. His approach goes beyond examining painterly tradition; it investigates the fundamental dynamics of perception, exposing the ease with which we trust our eyes.

In his work, Rieder doesn’t just play with paint; he uses it to stage a full-on interrogation of how we see. His paintings are like finely tuned traps for the eye, loaded with tricks, optical illusions, and technical wizardry. But he’s not flexing his artistic muscles to show off. Instead, Rieder is pulling us into a deeper conversation about the act of looking itself. Think magnified details, the illusion of three-dimensionality, and the strange allure of thin, translucent surfaces. He’s not rehashing the old debates about painterly craft; he’s ripping open the very idea of how our eyes construct the world. His sleights of hand aren’t just gimmicks; they reveal the blind trust we place in our vision, whether standing in front of a canvas or scrolling through a screen.
