Overview
"I work from a place of intimacy yet a strong feeling of estrangement. When approaching my subjects, I take special attention, focusing on the surrounding environment and its relation to my upbringing and the overall 'American spirit. The painting help me reconcile with the landscapes and values that shaped me, with ordinary elements that gain a sense of grace and elegance."
Lindsay Merrill's paintings explore the quiet tensions of contemporary American life through images of rural landscapes, suburban neighbourhoods, taxidermy, and nostalgic holiday decorations. Drawn to places and objects that are often overlooked, she transforms the familiar into scenes of unexpected beauty, revealing the emotional and cultural histories embedded within them.
During her recent solo presentation at EXPO Chicago with Enari Gallery, Merrill received the Northern Trust Purchase Prize, and Daughter was acquired by the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.

A life-sized deer rests atop a quilted green bedspread, its presence oscillating between a peaceful inhabitant and an impossible intrusion. Set against the wood-paneled nostalgia of a mid-century interior, the scene unfolds like a fever dream of the American pastoral.
The deer serves as a hollow witness to the private spaces of the previous century. While the landscape painting on the wall offers a controlled, framed view of nature, the deer itself is wild yet unnervingly still: a living ghost in a manufactured sanctuary. The piece highlights the sharp disconnect between the neoliberal promise of a secure "home" and a natural world that has been displaced, stuffed, and eventually reintroduced into our most intimate settings.
