Overview
Grace Lee, born in 1995, lives and works in London, UK. They received a BA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths, London, in 2017, followed by an MFA in Fine Art, Painting from The Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2021.
Recently, they held their debut solo exhibition, "Fitting Room", at Huxley Parlour in London. Lee has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at various galleries, such as South Parade in London, Monti8 in Latina, Mall Galleries in London, and Piazza Martiri della Libertà in Chiari. They received the Barto Dos Santos Memorial Award in 2021, the NOA15 East of England Award, and were shortlisted for The Worshipful Company of Painters-Stainers Award in 2015.
Lee's work is characterized by repeated motifs of various instruments, portraits, animals, and objects of daily life. Their style can be defined as bold and graphic, while their paintings often recreate scenes seemingly pulled from a comic book or a medieval manuscript.
Their inspiration is drawn from a diverse and remarkable selection of sources, varying from the British Museum Collection, the New Testament, renowned Japanese artists, such as Utagawa Hiroshige, and their personal experiences. Lee re-interprets these influences through their unique perspective, seamlessly blending them into their own artistic vision. This way, Lee's intricately detailed works continue to reveal new secrets and ideas, which excite and puzzle their audience.

Colour appears entirely different against black, as though a spotlight has isolated only what is fundamentally important. Of the three paintings, this work is the least conceptually cohesive, and so they approach it through a series of observations about what feels fundamentally important within it. The devil’s expression remains somewhat inscrutable: part curious, part annoyed, part surprised. The brow is furrowed while the eyes remain wide. The term “work” itself is ambiguous, both when referring to labour and when referring to art. Music notes flow from an unknown location toward an unknown destination. The devil makes work for idle hands.
