OverviewThomas van Dun is a visual artist and a contemporary composer. As a composer, he has written concert works for institutions including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Dutch National Ballet. As a visual artist, he works primarily with oil paint. His work is characterized by a sense of emotional fragility, dreamlike atmospheres, and strong ties to Dutch traditional painting techniques. Throughout his work he references art from the early renaissance and baroque but also takes inspiration from abstract expressionism, and above all; music. In 2024 he came to wider attention after winning the television competition Project Rembrandt with a large-scale painting depicting his journey toward accepting his HIV status. Since then, his work has been exhibited at the Rijksmuseum, the Centraal Museum Utrecht, and Internationaal Theater Amsterdam.
