• Enari Gallery is thrilled to announce its participation in the 25th-anniversary edition of Art Rotterdam with an exhibition of works by Raffael Bader, Johanna Bath, Ioanna Limniou, and Mongezi Ncaphayi. Bader's mesmerizing landscapes harmoniously merge with the sensual and delicately depicted moments of life in Bath's work. A captivating contrast is established between Limniou's expressive brushstrokes and unique portrayal of mundane existence and Ncaphayi's abstract works of art, drawing inspiration from music's dynamic nature. Collectively, these artists display a compelling and varied presentation that delves into the convergence of life and the natural world.

The gallery is proud to present three represented artists in Bader, Bath, and Limniou, alongside exhibited artist Ncaphayi, in their inaugural participation at Art Rotterdam. Previously, they have exhibited in esteemed selected international art fairs. Namely, Raffael Bader in Art Paris and Art Athina, Athens (2023); Johanna Bath in CAN Art Fair, Ibiza, and with Phillips, Hong Kong (2023); Ioanna Limniou in Art Athina, Athens (2023) and prospectively at Freize, London (2024); Mongezi Ncaphayi in Investec Cape Town Art Fair, South Africa (2022, 2020) and 1:54 Contemporary Art Fair, London (2018), alongside the current exhibition ‘A Tapestry of African Art’ at the Museum of Modern Art Long Island, New York.

  • RAFFAEL BADER
Raffael Bader. Just an Afternoon Away (detail), 2023, oil on canvas, 75 x 60 cm.

    RAFFAEL BADER

Raffael Bader was born in 1987 in Leipzig, Germany. The visual artist graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig, Germany, in 2019. He grew up in South Germany but traveled around in his youth. The change of location, which is also reflected in his longer stays abroad (Australia, Asia, and Latin America, among others), has a decisive influence on his work. Bader’s paintings deal with his view of a world full of tensions, while these tensions hold our world together.

In 2020 he began exhibiting internationally, including in Switzerland and the USA. In 2020 he received the "Denkzeit" grant from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, and in 2021 he received a work scholarship from the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn. He currently lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.

Raffael Bader. Off To The Canyon VI, 2023, oil on canvas, 75 x 60 cm.

The artists writes: 'In my paintings, which are largely characterized by landscape, I consider my view of a world full of tensions while these hold the world together. I pursue a nature that consists of all natural things and elements that surround us, as well as us humans as part of this nature. I understand nature as a chaotic ground that strives for harmony.

Most of the paintings start with "notes", which are small simple drawings that arise intuitively, then I decide whether I want to paint them. When I start with these drawings, the painting quickly takes on a life of its own. I paint with oil paint and oil pencils on canvas. I use a medium that makes the oil paint water-miscible, so I can create very thin watery layers as well as thicker ones. In conjunction with the oil pencils, I can create different textures. It is important to me that the canvas does not appear to be completely covered in paint. I also work with different techniques on paper.

  • Raffael Bader, Breeze in the Afternoon, 2023
  • Johanna Bath
Johanna Bath. honeysuckle (detail), 2023, oil on canvas, 50 x 40 cm.

    Johanna Bath

Johanna Bath was born in 1980 in Warendorf, Germany. After her highschool diploma in 1999, she moved to Hamburg to get a professional training in Illustration Design at Bildkunst Akademie, Hamburg. Bath finished with a degree in 2002 but felt the need to deepen and expand her artistic skills and applied for Design Studies at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaft, Hamburg (HAW).

The idea of “time” and everything that is linked to that emotionally such as memory, transience and the brevity of a moment drives her need to paint. Time is abstract and therefore tricky to paint but when connected to our experience and memory, it is filled with sentiment and emotion. When painting, Johanna reflects on those narratives of time and memory and tries to depict "a sense of time" on canvas.

Johanna Bath. illusion, 2023, oil and spray on canvas, 30 x 22 cm.

‘I am madly in love with life, with the wonder it holds, the blissful moments, even the heartbreak, the hurt, the loss - because I am so aware that every moment is a singular sensation and won’t come back. I am pushing myself to be aware of every second passing, paying attention to even the most insignificant things that add up to be (my) life.'

  • Johanna Bath, Dreamer, 2023
  • IOANNA LIMNIOU
Ioanna Limniou. Party, 2023, oil on canvas, 170 x 150 cm.

    IOANNA LIMNIOU

Ioanna Limniou, born in 1987, lives and works in Athens, Greece. Limniou's paintings feature classical figurative and still-life imagery rendered with an expressionistic aesthetic. As an artist, Limniou integrates the materiality of her mediums in her work. In her artistic creations, she employs oils, crayons, and watercolor pencils.

The combination of her technique and subject matter gives the impression of peering into memory, both the artists and the viewers. Limniou's art explores uncharted territories of human and animal perception. Her works paint a picture of the intricate dance of existence, portraying the tender interplay between sentient beings in their natural habitats, the harmonious coexistence of humans and their animal companions, and the rhythmic cadence of daily rituals. In this realm filled with nostalgia and lighthearted humor, Limniou invites us to a space where the past and present intermingle seamlessly.

Limniou masterfully weaves a tapestry that seamlessly intertwines historical context with the contemporary, resulting in a space that evokes an almost timeless aura. This effect is akin to the enduring qualities of the figures and landscapes she captures. With every meticulously placed brushstroke and thoughtfully composed canvas, she gracefully ushers us into a dimension where time itself becomes an instrument, harmonizing with the cadence of her artistic vision. In this realm, figures and landscapes are transmuted into eternal echoes, resonating with our collective experiences and memories. MONGEZI NCAPAHYI

Mongezi Ncaphayi was born in 1983 in South Africa, where he currently lives and works in Cape Town. His artistic contributions play an essential role in today's contemporary art scene, presenting a distinctive perspective that enriches global creative conversations. Mongezi Ncaphayi. Into the new I, 2023, mixed media on stretched canvas, 170 x 145 cm.
'I've consistently described my work as spiritual maps, and currently, I'm exploring the concept of the "migration of spirit." While in the past, my focus mainly revolved around the socio-political aspects of migration within the South African landscape, my recent work delves into the spiritual dimension of migration. This dimension, to me, is distinct from the socio-political realm.'
